Avon Garage History

(Photo Credit Gary Carr [Facebook] Penmaenmawr : Old Photos)

The building features on the 1890-1914 Map of Penmaenmawr entitled Avon garage.

We believe it has always been commercial in its usage, never having any private use that we can find.  If you have more details or any other information we are keen to know any history of the Garage going further back.

Commercial Garage (entry 38. Motor Trade Taxation Records) 1953/1958

There are likely more trade records in paper form but we stumbled across this one archived in 1979 and scanned.

Q & A

Can Avon Garage sell me parts?

We don't supply parts, tyres or exhausts to the public we maintain our own fleet and repair / prepare and sell a limited number of vehicles (mostly Classics/4x4) for sale on the internet.

Do you do MOT's ?

Avon Garage is not an MOT centre and is not open to the general public for modern vehicle repairs.  We use local MOT centres ourselves.  Our work on classic cars, 4x4 and sports cars is by appointment only.

Does Avon Garage compete with other local garages?

Avon Garage is not open to the general public for maintenance and repair of modern vehicles.  It services maintains and stores our own business groups vehicles and occasionally restores and sells classic cars, sports cars and 4x4's.  We do not want to reduce trade for any other local garage so will not trade against them.  Our customers are by appointment only.

What hours is the garage in use for work?

We do not open outside of 08:00 and 19:00 daily and use the garage on a random as required basis.

What are our plans with the garage?

We plan to replace the building with a similar design but using a new portal frame building and continue use as we have since May 2020.  The main difference will be the building, if successful, will have much better thermal and acoustic properties.  It will be off the walls by 1m reducing damp for both us and neighbours.  Noise from the building will be reduced from its present un insulated corrugated tin roof.  We would also like to tidy the site up further, re tarmac the yard and repair the stone walls retaining their original style replacing the now removed timber fence around the boundary.

We welcome neighbours and local peoples comments/suggestions and have already taken on board some great ideas that will help the building and yard fit in with the location and be something other Pen locals can also be proud of.

How can I see the plans?

If you go to Conwy Council planning portal you can view the plans and can write in any comments positive also welcome and suggestions.  The link to the site is below:

https://edm.conwy.gov.uk/Planning/lg/dialog.page?lang=en&org.apache.shale.dialog.DIALOG_NAME=gfplanningsearch&Param=lg.Planning&ref_no=0/47923&viewdocs=true

Why is the proposed new building narrower?

To maintain a good useable space whilst taking the building off the adjoining domestic homes walls by approx. 1m.  This should reduce noise transmission and damp from the roof running into the side walls.  It also improves access for our neighbours to check and maintain their buildings and have windows cleaned etc. Apparently window cleaning has been a challenge here for over 125+ years that the garage has stood.

Will the garage/yard bring employment?

It already has part time attendance and with a new building could employ 2 people.

Are we registered with NRW (Natural Resources Wales) for waste oil?

Yes we are..

Registration Number CAT865

https://nrwregulatory.naturalresources.wales/HazWaste/Application/ViewAll/5c65b6f0-f695-4d07-9a3c-326facdf0d09

Oil, oily rags and old oil filters are stored in approved containers and bunded storage containers as required.  When removed off site they are handled by a registered waste carrier and we keep records (Waste Transfer Notes) of all hazardous waste (OIL) that leaves the garage.

Our director is CIWM (Chartered Institute of Waste Management) Qualified for the handling of waste such as oil.

Is Avon Garage / Corvus Facilities (Corvus Security Ltd) registered as a waste carrier ?

Yes we are...

Corvus Facilities (Corvus Security Ltd) is registered as an upper tier waste carrier, broker or dealer with Natural Resources Wales.

We wont be handling waste on the site outside of a standard 1100L bin and handling waste oil from the vehicle maintenance carried out on the site.  We aim to keep the site very tidy for our neighbours.

From time to time during maintenance we may have a skip on site temporarily as required in relation to work on the site.

Do you park on Paradise Road, what about obstructions to our drives?

We don't need to we own the Garage and yard for that purpose.  We too have issues of our gates being blocked every week, usually by Amazon and other couriers who are just dropping for a minute and abandon their vans.  We have been using the site since MAY 2020 without use of the road.

Also a key point here is we aren't operating as a public drop in garage, no customers attend without appointment, we look after our own fleet so we don’t have un expected visitors in cars other than our staff and vehicles which is infrequent as they are all working.  Staff arent deployed from here either we have had an office in Bangor since 2008 which is not changing.

We don't own HGV or Lorries, nor have any interest in them.

All cars are reversed into the site turning outside the gates on land we own.

Do you increase drainage issues with the replacement building design?

Drainage is a problem in Penmaenmawr as anybody who lives here knows.  You will be pleased to know we have managed to work through the drains on the site with Dwr Cymru and can confirm none of the drains feed into the Dingle as everybody first thought.  They go into the Dwr Cymru main sewer.  The only minor issue we have had since moving in May 2020 was a badly maintained blocked drain on the yard from pine needles and debris that was cleared, now has a debris trap and is regularly cleaned.

We have a soak away and channel drain at the entrance and discharge NO rain water from our site to the road or surrounding properties.

Our roof rainwater presently goes onto the floor and into the drain that leads into the sewer.  If the new building goes ahead an additional soak away is to be added so the new building will actually reduce water into the sewers from what it is now by taking all the water off the roof into a soakaway on the site.  In effect the new building will actually reduce pressure on the sewers by the amount of water that comes off the roof.

What about smells? Do you paint or do other work that involves smell or gasses?

Avon Garage is not a paint shop.  Our paint work if needed is done in  body shops.  Other than vehicle welding repairs which are infrequent we are not a welding or manufacturing shop either.   We will not be causing a nuisance with smells.
